Throughout this project I have created a series of art work in relation to my object – my watch. I have found that colour is one of my favourite and strongest aspects when creating a piece of work. I feel that a bold colourful piece which is both engaging and eye catching is an important factor in my desired specialist pathway – graphic design.
With having a wide range of colourful pieces, for my final piece I would like to link these with graphic design potentially in an advertising manor. Although I have attempted a couple of graphic design pieces – I would like to emphasise this further by pushing my skills into a more obvious graphic design piece. Previously I created a ‘Photoshop mock up’ where I displayed my art work as if it was a picture in a frame. When overlooking my mock up, I found that this could be developed by adding text over the top and presenting my work as if it was being advertised. With my object being a watch I feel this would be a great opportunity to stretch my graphic design skills and begin to think about typography and advertisement.
In order to create my final piece I am thinking of taking a serious of photographs using a professional canon camera. I will focus on a range of camera angles including: close ups, medium close ups, high angles and low angles. Whilst taking my photographs I will keep into consideration lighting, I will take my object to the dark room and will use LED panels to focus the light onto the watch. With my object being a silver shiny watch I feel I can make this look a really strong and powerful full object if I ensure the light hits it in certain places. I am hoping for my watch to look like it is glowing.
When taking previous photographs of my work, I found that the contrast between a pile of autumn leaves and the shiny cold watch worked together really well. Due to this, I will be using the background of the leaves which I have already taken and placing this onto Photoshop. Using Photoshop I will use layers to blend the watch with the background and will continue by playing with the arrangement of the watch on the page. I do have a huge interest in colour therefore I will adjust the brightness, contrast, shadows and colour of my background to gain the best results. Alongside this I will be trying to find a perfect combination of a colourful background with the cold shiny watch, I will make sure to not overpower the watch as it is the main purpose of my design.
With my final piece being graphic design related I will be communicating with an audience by using visuals alongside text. Typography is an important factor when creating this piece therefore I have conducted research on the basics of typography. I will be having a discussion with graphics tutor on the factors on typography to confine my ideas. The software I will be using will be illustrator as I feel this is the best way to experiment with text. Whilst doing this I will consider what is the most important messages from my advertisement poster which will be help me when choosing the size and position of the text. Once I have a clearer understanding of the style I wan’t my text to be in I will continue by adding this onto my poster. At this stage I am thinking of using a white text as I feel this will contrast with the silver watch. If I were to use black text I don’t feel this would stand out enough and may look hidden against the bright background.
For my final piece I have been researching existing graphic design advertisement designs which is where I came across these graphic design posters (artist unknown.) I was instantly attracted to the style of his posters especially how he engaged his text within the purpose of the posters.
The main inspiration I have taken from Sao’s posters is the bold writing over laying the object. In my situation this could be the name of the watch overlaying the photograph of the image itself. Alongside this the smaller writing which isn’t as dominant is seen to be the less important information on the poster which links back to the idea of thinking of sizing and position.
To get my final piece to exhibition standard, I want my poster to be printed onto an A1 poster roll. I wan’t my poster to be presented by being nailed into the wall in each four corners, I don’t wan’t my poster to be tightly against the wall as I feel this defeats the purpose of it being a poster. I want it to have a feel as though it is outside hung up in a city for an audience to engage with. Another way I have considered when presenting my work is that I could use a Photoshop mock up and add it into a billboard which will exaggerate it’s purpose of being an advertisement.
The time schedule I have set to complete my final project is a week long, I feel this is reasonable due to my work being mainly computer based.
